This is just mean

Lots and lots of articles about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. The documents include his Harvard application, an online diary, a letter to Harvard admin…this just goes too far, even Zuckerberg deserves some privacy.

He’s taking legal action against this magazine, and all I can think is good for him. The court documents and testimony there is fine. The personal stuff?? Has absolutely no place on a website, especially when NO information has been blocked. His parents don’t deserve the exposure, if nothing else.

Really…does anyone need to see this??

Why does the UK get all the cool TV?

As I’ve talked about before in here, my latest obsession is Doctor Who. I’m rewatching the old series, and I’ve discovered that there is a TON of doctor who stuff in the UK that we just don’t ever get here. There is Doctor Who Confidential (Torchwood has “Declassified”), Doctor Who the Animated Series (with the voices of doctor who and Martha from the show), and the Sarah Jane Chronicles. HOURS and hours of stuff. And that’s not even counting the specials, the interviews…

For example - Time Crash just aired in the UK during the Children in Need Special. Everyone in the US should go find it and download it, it’s all of 8 minutes long, but it’s David Tennant’s doctor meeting Peter Davison’s doctor, and it’s an absolute blast to watch. How could we not even KNOW that this aired???

The Sarah Jane Chronicles are adorable as well. It’s a pre-teeny type show, Saturday morning TV type stuff, and is focused around a couple of kids…who hang out with Sarah Jane Smith. And Sarah Jane is very cool, especially since I’m flipping between watching that and watching her 30 years ago on Doctor Who. It’s surprisingly quality children’s programming.

The more I dig into BBC tv, the more I find really neat science fiction shows I’ve never heard of. Some are random Doctor Who spinoffs, but some are shows like Hex, which is a fantastic show most often compared to Buffy (not entirely accurate, but similar). Neverwhere’s also really good, the book was based on the BBC series, not the other way around. In that instance, I think the show is better than the book. But again…good luck finding it. I got the Neverwhere DVD set as a present, and I’m pretty sure I remember being told that the DVD’s had to be ordered direct from the BBC.

Non scifi BBC tv is great too, of course. I, Claudius is one of the best miniseries I have ever seen, the BBC version of Casanova puts the American version to shame, and of course, how could I not mention Pride and Prejudice. Another one where the American movie doesn’t even compare to the BBC one. And then there’s UK Big Brother, which is just in a class of its own.

Oh, AND, there’s the Big Red Button on BBC. Interactive television. How cool is that?

I remember being stunned as a kid when I was told that there were only three television stations in the UK. So few!! But quantity does not equal quality, and having only one television provider lets them do things like the big red button. I can’t even imagine what it would take to do something like that here. Right now Hollywood’s having enough trouble writing anything. :)
On the subject of the writers strike, I drive past the picket lines on my way to work every morning, and they’re not shrinking at all. If anything, the crowds there have become larger this past week. If anyone’s so inclined, please donate a dollar to send a box of pencils to the studio execs. A list of the writers supporting this is on the site, and if your shows are listed…join in.

If this strike isn’t resolved soon, well, I wonder if I can get someone in Europe to set up a slingbox for me…

Neat New MySpace Stuff!

A work related entry today, since we have new things on MySpace worth talking about.

- MySpace IM plus Skype was released this morning. It is literally “MySpace plus Skype” – to steal the description from the site: Talk to your friends on IM for FREE, call cell phones right from your PC, and even get your own local phone number and voicemail!

- Aaaaand Friend Updates are out. People are calling it our version of the Facebook “activity feed,” but I think it’s closer in functionality to the AIM Buddy Feed (people love to think Facebook invented this feature, but I’ve had my various updates from my blog/flickr/digg/delicious showing in AIM/AIM Pages ever since we did the Buddy Feed ages ago). You have full control over who can see what about you, and over who you want to see updating about what (preferences are here). We’re very excited, I think people are really going to enjoy the feature, especially since if you don’t want to use it, you don’t have to. Completely up to you.

Shocked at School

I think a lot of people saw the bus safety videos in school with the huge accidents happening from not paying attention – in one a girl was run over by the bus, in another a kid sliced his neck open – pretty nasty stuff. Especially given that I was already kind of a fraidy cat. Scary TV and movies just weren’t my thing back then.

When I was in eighth grade, the trains from my suburb to NYC were upgraded to include a third rail to power the trains. In the great tradition of those bus safety videos, we got videos showing us how you would be electrocuted if you went near the third rail. Those were closely followed by some other videos on the dangers of lightning.

After those “educational” videos, I was certainly scared. My friends and I would throw candy down at the third rail, just waiting to see something sizzle. I had nightmares about stepping on the third rail and not being grounded properly, the whole concept of only being safe if electricity ran straight through your body freaked me out to no end.

Not that I needed scaring, electricity already had me scared enough, in the form of lightning. I’d spent every summer of my life in a pool, and knew full well what happened at the very first rumble of thunder. Lifeguards started screaming to get out of the pool. You were going to get electrocuted!!

I don’t know how many months or years later, but one night, I was on the phone in a room upstairs in my house. My house was set back somewhat from the road, and surrounded by big, tall trees. It was thundering and lightning out, but I was a teenage girl, and someone was on the phone.

The phone was wired, of course, no wireless yet, and set directly next to a window facing the trees.

I started jabbering away, and tried not to pay attention to the thunder and lighting. I distinctly remember turning my back on the window so I wouldn’t see the lightning. But then I heard and felt a huge “pop” in my ear…and the lights went out. I was fine, it was just some static thing, and it was hardly uncommon for us to lose power during a storm. Regardless, I was very spooked.

There have been lots of other incidents like that since – all coincidences that I’m translating as scary, I know. I’m that person who powers down everything the second there’s a storm. Or at least, I did when I lived in Virginia, my building was the tallest around, and was regularly hit by lightning during a storm. Our power would go out for a second or two, then back on, but even that was enough to make me worry about my electronics. I’m not so sure I have to worry about huge thunderstorms in LA.

That’s my thing. I hate lightning, am freaked out by the idea of electrical currents, and anyone who knows me has probably seen me turn green at the sound of thunder. Someday I’ll get over it, maybe. But first, I need to settle things with Tom Baker.

Me, Around the Web

People laugh at me when I tell them that I’m on every social network on earth, and that if I’m not on one, I sure should get on it soon. Not only do I actually enjoy seeing what’s out there - after all, I was a geek online like everyone else years before I started working online, albeit on BBS’ and Usenet instead of on the actual web - but it is part of my job to know what’s happening in the industry. What the hot new sites are, what isn’t hot. What features do people like where, what don’t they like. What are they saying…and so on. It’s all another way of trying to figure out what people want. And making things people want IS my job.

At some point I should make a list of all of my profiles everywhere, just for fun. But for now, here are links to sites I actually do use. :)
MySpace
Facebook
Pownce
Digg
Twitter
Tumblr
Flickr
LinkedIn

And a few links to very recently created spots that I’m still playing with:

Extravigator (I can’t find a profile URL for the life of me, but one guess what my name is)
Yahoo! Mash
MTV Think

Oh, and apologies in advance if all of the entries I did this past weekend via email republish in everyone’s RSS feeds now, but I noticed none of them have subject lines. I gotta fix it or else it’ll annoy me forever. :)

Home!! Well, almost, on the bus going to get my car. Off site parking in la is pretty sweet, my car will be nicely detailed when I pick it up.

My flight from chicago was predictibly late, we had to switch planes because the ac didn’t work. But all in all, not so bad, 2 hrs late this weekend is fine.

And now I’m going home to sleep, back to work tomorrow!

According to my mother, I should tell people that today I went to the Cornwall covered bridge. It was cute, there are apparently very few covered bridges left in the country. Go fig.

Other than that, we had a quiet day. I think the whole family has caught my mom’s cold, and it is colder outside than yesterday - 20 degrees or so. Brrr!

But, home to LA bright and early tomorrow am. As much as I love new england, I am very much looking forward to warming up a bit.

I think I may be getting a little too used to la weather. We went to an outlet outlet mall today, and I was freeeezing. Now, it is probably around 30 here (just under freezing), but still, I’m a new yorker who loves to ski and ice skate. I’m pathetic.

After the mall, we hit the brand spankin new local Target. And if there is anything I love more than target, its a target with no people. It’s probably a good thing I’m in ct, otherwise I would have had far too much fun.

Now we’re settled in for leftovers (and dad’s grilling steaks, in case turkey wasn’t enough). I’ll warm up at some point, I hope, I feel silly being this cold. Wimpy me!

Happy turkey day all!

I am at my parents’ place in CT for the holiday, in the middle of nowhere surrounded by nothing by trees. It’s always nice coming out here, especially living in LA, this is my chance to see the leaves changing for the fall.

We have no real plans for the day, beyond eating, watching tv and overdosing on triptophan (sp?).

May everyone have a good, safely overindulgent holiday!

Every fan always says that all they want is an opportunity to interact with their favorite whoever on a ‘normal’ level, not fan-celeb.

I was just, literally, sitting next to the group I’ve loved for over 20 yrs on the plane. And lemme say this:

The hyperactive one really is craaaazy hyperactive (a riot), the quiet one who hates to fly really does hate it that much, and the nice one really is that nice.

It took everything I had not to grin like a loon, especially when my ipod playing random would pull up a song of theirs. But it was awesome.

I’d lost a lot of respect for these guys due to some things I’d seen 10+ years ago. I’m glad to say that just as I’ve grown up, so have they. And it was so cool to be stuck with them. :)
