What do you collect?
I collect anything Eloise I can get my hands on, DVDs of old TV shows I love, wine, really good books I just can’t let go, teddy bears, random geeky gadgets, and my latest collection - Domain Names.
I’ve owned one domain or another for well over 10 years now, but only recently did I start actually signing up for those “stalk this domain for me” programs to truly get the domains I wanted. And those programs work quite well - good enough that I didn’t even notice they’d gone and purchased my name for me last month…StephanieBergman net/org/com are all mine! *FINALLY, it’s my friggin name.*
I will probably do something real-ish with those, definitely more than just redirect to this blog (which most of my other domains do), and more than what I did at katchoo.com. But that one was really just for the fun factor of owning the domain.
I find all of this really funny at the moment, especially given the fact that I had a conversation with someone just yesterday where he was telling me all the domains he owns. He’d noticed I own one. I said no…I own a few more. Little did I know I’d just gotten a whopping three more. I’m stalking one more domain (it expires in August), and I think after that I’m done buying up names for random reasons.
It’s funny, though, buying domains can be just like buying songs on itunes. You see one, then think…but I should get com/net/org at least. And then you think of some other variant on the name - oooh, I should get that too. Next thing you know, you’ve bought over 10 domains, for no good reason. It’s just too easy, one click, and it’s yours.
I think I just spent enough years with my site on a directory on some random site (http://foobarwebsite.com/users/mee) somewhere that as soon as I could be a top level site - for whatever that site was going to be - I jumped on it. It’s just nice. Silly, considering that I’m not exactly buying up the domains for work, but still nice.
Am I the only one who goes a little nutsy with the domains?
