The Meek Shall Inherit

This article is all about the socioeconomic split between teenagers on MySpace and those on Facebook. It pretty much states obvious - that people hang around people who have the same mores as they do. Is that a surprise?

Most of us already acknowledged over a year ago that a certain social network is the place for drugs in South America, another’s good for hooking up in Korea, and so on. I could find a difference in people who use Xanga vs LiveJournal, even. So why is this Facebook/MySpace thing news?

Not to mention - I would much rather build a site for the dorks of the world than for the fratboy set. I was a goth when I was a teenager, and I have no doubt most of my friends went through some similar phase or another. I was hanging out on IRC and playing around with MUDS. The fratboys were…I dunno…going to frat parties?

No offense to fratboys, of course, but the world is your oyster. Let me spend my time making things better for the rest of us, ‘k?

Speakeasy, I knew you when…

Remember a few months back where I was all nervous that Speakeasy - my wonderful independent ISP - would change because it was bought by Best Buy?

Well, lemme put it this way.

I moved to California on 5/21. It is now 6/25. I still do not have internet access at home, and Speakeasy is not able to set it up for another month.

Speakeasy’s formerly wonderful customer support has been terrible to deal with the past month and a half. I tried as hard as I could to stick with them, I am a very loyal customer when I find something I like, but I really can’t wait anymore.

I called Time Warner this morning, and am getting Road Runner Saturday.

That’s over 6 weeks for Speakeasy, and less than 6 days for Time Warner.

How the mighty fall.

I could say many snarky things about this, but I think it speaks for itself.

Hangin at the car wash…

I’m out and about now, doing errands, and right now. waiting while my absolutely filthy car is washed. my car survived the ride across the country just fine, but it did get verrry dirty.

I have to say, though (and I remember this from living in nor cal), it’s kinda fun to do errands when it is beautiful and sunny out. I may be bored waiting for my car, but at least there’s sun and (kinda) fresh air.

gotta admit, times like these I rather like living here.

Give My Regards to Broadway

Tonight, the Broadway community will get together for the one award show I look forward to, and watch from start to finish. The Tony’s!!

A Chorus Line will be opening the show, which, as I guess most people know by now, I’m kind of obsessed with. When I was a kid, my parents had a record of the A Chorus Line soundtrack. They still don’t know WHY they had it, but they did…and I listened to it over and over and over. They also had Annie and Pirates of Penzance, which I listened to, but it was A Chorus Line that captivated me and truly turned me into a Broadway baby at a very young age. My 13th birthday present was tickets to the show on Broadway, and getting to go into NYC with a friend (no parents!) for the first time. I knew every word to the show, and was absolutely enthralled. I’d seen other shows by then, but even then, it was all about A Chorus Line.

I freaked out when I heard it was coming back, and saw the show this last November for my birthday. I spent most of the show in tears, I was so excited to see it again, and I clearly wasn’t the only one in the theater who felt that way - the reactions from the crowd were wonderful. No screaming like you get at Rent or something, just clear love of the show, and thrill that we were all seeing it again after all this time. The new production is fairly close to the original, which was exactly what we wanted. Don’t play with perfection, right?

A Chorus Line is like no other show on Broadway. It has an incredible history, and the story of its creation is amazing…the stories in the show are, for the most part, the life stories of the original cast members. I still love other great musicals, but the feeling will never be the same.

Tonight I’m looking forward to seeing A Chorus Line perform (and win best revival!), as well as Mary Poppins, and Legally Blonde. That’s really what the Tony’s are to me - an opportunity to see a number from shows I’ve seen and loved, and see new shows to figure out what I want to see. They’re also the one time that I can feel like I’m not the only one who loves Broadway - love, well, a slight obsession with musicals is not a common thing these days. It’s all about the musicals to me, I watch the scenes from the plays on the Tony’s, but I rarely go to see them. I’d always rather see a bad musical than a good play.

Soo, while today itself is going to be no fun, I have lots of unpacking left to do and am determined to get rid of this land of boxes I’m currently living in, at least I have something amazing to look forward to tonight. Three hours of Broadway. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Gay Bomb??

Got this from my brother - apparently the Pentagon was thinking about building a “Gay Bomb” that would supposedly make the soldiers stop fighting, and have sex with each other.

I don’t think there are words for how crazy this is…

Oops.

The TiVo’s now up and running, but setting up the IR on my cable box seems to have totally hosed it. I am currently looking at a “This channel should be available shortly” screen and it thinks it’s noon (I unplugged the power after it clearly wasn’t working right to reboot). And I know it’s not that cable’s out - the box in the other room looks fine.

I give it another ten-fifteen minutes to fix itself, then Time Warner’s getting a call. I believe, anyway, that they can bounce the box from where they are - I think Comcast has done that for me before. Or at least I think so.

This is a riot.

Oh no, poor TiVo

Wow, that was creepy.

I finally found my remotes (can anyone explain why they were in a box labeled “books”??), and set up the TiVo in this room (the one in the other room, and my whole receiver/speaker setup can wait for a while).

It wouldn’t start up at first - I ended up staring at a very omnious green screen that said “The DVR has detected a serious problem and is now attempting to fix it.” It goes on to say that this will take around three hours, and in all caps, “PLEASE DO NOT UNPLUG OR RESTART THE DVR.”

Then it said that if the tivo doesn’t restart in three hours, I should call Customer Support. Which I can’t ever do, because I’m pretty much always in some beta or another.

Twenty minutes later, the TiVo had restarted itself, and I’m attempting to go through guided setup now (using the complex’s internet connection, since I don’t have a phone line or my own internet line yet).

I suppose we’ll see. The TiVo’s been dying for a while, it’s about five years old, and been through three moves, two of those across the country. If it’s truly screwed up, then it may be about time for me to go HD. My TV will need to be replaced anyway (the movers totally trashed the casing), and it’d be really stupid to buy a non-HD tv and series 2 at this point.

But for now…it’s going…keep your fingers crossed for me.

EDIT: Just did some poking around online - the GSOD (”green screen of death”) means that, sure enough, my hard drive is dying. No surprise there.

And the TiVo doesn’t seem to like my complex’s network much…hrmf.

Wikipedia Makes Me Laugh

While it’s fun to say “I’m in Wikipedia,” the entry is far from the truth. Whoever wrote it had fun rewriting history, I suppose..

I still think that someone should write a book or something about Pseudo someday, but this sure isn’t it.
